We've used this two times already at the beach in NJ and it's held up well in strong wind. Of course, it helps to have a good umbrella to go with this (one with a 'vent' at the top.) It's made of a thick, durable plastic and the anchor does just what you think it would, allowing any size umbrella to go deep into the sand. It's easy to twist in and then pop your umbrella into the hole and tighten the screw for a perfect fit.
